The Brief: Top Texas News for Aug. 6, 2012
The Big Conversation:
Ted Cruz capped off a whirlwind week with his first appearance on national Sunday morning political TV.
In a 10-minute interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, Cruz offered his take on how he'd serve in the U.S. Senate if elected in November.
"I am perfectly happy to compromise and work with anybody — Republicans, Democrats, libertarians," Cruz said. "I'll work with Martians if — and the 'if' is critical — they are willing to cut spending and reduce the debt. The problem so many Republicans have fallen into is they compromise going backward."

What is the point he is making? Maybe the difference is that the Hispanics tend to have larger families and a firmer footing in their "community". Good for them if family take them in and help. But it doesn't make them any more or less noble for this fact. Shame on him for implying that people going public to ask for help, however they can get it, is a sign of poor character. The bottom line is lots of people need lots of help. Has he been close up and looked in the eyes of one of those "panhandlers?"

Pass this on to Mr. Cruz -- twice I have given $ to panhandlers who appeared to be Mexican nationals. Both times I was approached in grocery store parking lots and both times, even with the language barrier, seemed to be in dire straits. Mr Cruz must live in a different universe from me.

You are all such racists. That a Cuban-American did well just kills you. Sad and a total fail.

Ted Cruz is an idiot.

Cheryl Cox Brinkman he lives here in TX and he knows what he said is not true. Maybe he closes his eyes when he goes out. All races do it, when they are hungry and have nothing else to help them. I see it all the time here in TX.

He should visit a food pantry.
Debbie Mason via Texas Tribune on Facebook
He wants their vote.
David Alan Turchen via Texas Tribune on Facebook
I invite Mr Cruz ti venture out away from his country club and come to Brownsville Tx and he will see Hispanic panhandlers at every freeway exit.

this dumb ass obviously hasn't been to the rio grande valley. he should make a quick visit to one of the fine cities down there before he makes such a dumb statement.
Aida Dyanne Ornelas via Texas Tribune on Facebook
There are Latinos in El Paso begging in lots of places. It's very sad, especially the mothers who appear to be indigenous people from the interior of Mexico, with little babies. Cruz is obviously clueless about poverty in Texas.

Not my favorite Cruz quote, and I have two responses (one for him and one for the commenters): 1) I have seen Hispanic panhandlers every time I've been in Mexico (usually children), and 2) not all panhandlers are in "dire straits" http://now.msn.com/panhandler-made-dollar60000-last-year

I noticed that same thing when we lived in Houston...then we moved to Austin it was the same. We are a proud people... We are willing to wash dishes. Or clean other peoples homes.

Mr. Cruz, poverty does not discriminate.

I concur that the Hispanic culture strongly promotes family and hard work... so of course the right-wing wants to take away their right to vote and round them up to ship them home.
Anthony Maddaloni via Texas Tribune on Facebook
What A total idiot.
Danny Jensen via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Does that same message, hold true for Lone Star cards?
Christine Kesling via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Um, hello Cruz, have you ever been to Austin?
Jalapeño Schwartz via Texas Tribune on Facebook
No, they stay at home and starve!
Luisa Inez Newton via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Cruz should visit San Antonio near the Commerce Street Bridge, ROFL. What an idiot.

Ted is on his game. Everyone knows that latin countries are the economic powers in the world. That is why his family immigrated here to help the U.S. become more like Cuba. We all know that millions leave the U.S. for the prosperity of Spain, Portugal, Mexico,etc.... In short, better than Dewhurst still a politician.
Chris Bazan via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Cruz needs to visit DF, San Antonio, the valley, or even the (comparatively speaking) rich city known as Monterrey, MX. He has no clue what he is talking about. Cruz was a rich kid who grew up around private schools and country clubs and doesn't speak for the Hispanic community, he speaks for the country clubs and the anti-evolution idiots.

I'm not sure what the trend is in the rest of the state, but in Dallas,it is 24/7 Cruzathon. There is NO mention of Paul Sadler. Many people think Cruz is the next senator....now.There has been a definite news blackout in my area.how about yours?

Mr.Cruz is out of touch. I am sorry to say that he is a Latino. I understand on what bases you were elected but you don't have look the other shoulder. You talked about unemployment rates! We buddy panhandlers are unemployed .

Mr. Cruz claims his family and he suffered to advance in the U.S. He thinks we don't know Cubans are privileged immigrants benefitting from the Cuban Refugee Adjustment Act (CRAA), Public Law 89-732, a United States federal law enacted on November 2, 1966. Passed by the 89th United States Congress and signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson, the law applies to any native or citizen of Cuba who has been inspected and admitted or paroled into the United States after January 1, 1959 and has been physically present for at least one year; and is admissible to the United States as a permanent resident. Liar.
Manny Sepulveda via Texas Tribune on Facebook
@dolores ... correct ... if they were mexican they would probably have been 'illegal' like susan martinez grandpa of new mexico... cubans get a lot of breaks because of that act..
Manny Sepulveda via Texas Tribune on Facebook
@ a lerma -- love your post-- este guey!!!
Leesa Monroe via Texas Tribune on Facebook
This comment from Cruz is out of touch. Everybody is making a big deal about electing a Cuban American. Aren't most Cuban americans republicans? The win by Jason villains is more telling. Conservatives see a man that looks and behaves like them. He is even a baptist unlike most Hispanics. I just hope he will represent all us texans and not just the tea party and religious folks.
