The Brief: Top Texas News for Aug. 13, 2012
The Big Conversation:
Intended to shake up the presidential race, the announcement of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's running mate has set Texas Republicans aglow.
Romney's decision — officially announced on Saturday but leaked late Friday — shocked political observers, many of whom had predicted that he would choose either U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio or former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. News outlets called the selection of Ryan, the author of the controversial House Republican budget plan, a high-risk move sure to energize both Republicans and Democrats.

Perry needs to go back and sit on that stool with his dunce cap on.

Perry added, "And that will take the focus off of me while Icontinue to destroy Texas."

He did remember 3 things, so you have to respect Perry's commitment.

Mitt refused to release his tax returns in 2002, running against Shannon O'Brien. O'Brien released hers, but Mitt demanded to see the tax returns for O'Brien's husband, wanting to know "What are you hiding?" Asked about the 1994 Kennedy campaign, Fehrnstrom said Romney will still release his returns - if Senator Kennedy does. (He had demanded it in '94 Senate race)
The law in MA says that you have to be a continuous inhabitant for the seven years immediately prior to your running for Governor.
In 2002 that residency requirement was really a big problem for Mitt. He maintained publicly that he had always paid taxes as a MA. resident, so the residency requirement was going to be no problem.
In June 2002, that story fell apart. It turned out that he had NOT been paying taxes as a Mass. resident.
He had been paying taxes as a Utah resident. After he got caught, he admitted yeah, he'd been paying taxes as a Utah resident, BUT he was retroactively now, after the fact, now that he was running for Governor, now going back a few years that he was going to change that..retroactively (*cough Bain cough*)

Good brief. Gov Perry is correct.

Perry need to go back to school. Congress is so busy throwing sand like 3 year olds in a sand box that they have absolutely shut down our government. Congress is the problem not the president! It's time to start workling for the country and not the party.

As usual, whatever Perry says is exactly, totally, completely wrong.

Rick Perry needs an attitude adjustment, some time with a fact checker and some time OUT from politics! He is wrong on so many things the comment section won't do for the forum to express.

Why doesn't Rick Perry just shut up?

Oh Perry, you so stupid. Destroying America? Hyperbole much?

Unsurprisingly, Gov. Perry seems misinformed.
"Blue collar voters, where Obama is weak, and seniors, a key GOP constituency, are not fans:
'In March, the United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll offered respondents two options for [Medicare]. J
ust 19 percent of whites older than 65 endorsed Ryan’s approach, which said “Medicare should be changed to a system where the government provides seniors with a fixed sum of money they could use either to purchase private health insurance or to pay the cost of remaining in the current Medicare program.”
Fully 74 percent of white seniors said instead that “Medicare should continue as it is today, with the government providing health insurance and paying doctors and hospitals directly for the services they provide to seniors.” Among non-college whites, 63 percent said they preferred the current system, while only 26 percent backed Ryan’s approach."

And for what it's worth, it's a bit rich to suggest Ryan is somehow great at math for anyone that actually read his budget. It's a hollow 'threat' to say the least.

governor Rick Perry is a mouth for the Pious Immature Conservatives~ the same people who are with-holding the funds that would create new jobs. With-holding the funds so that the President will look bad. Everyone [with few exceptions] knows what's really going on and instead of choking the general public with life threatening policies that would drive us back into the dysfunctional "church" they should be exploring what the meaning of the word 'LOVE" is and getting to know why we [the 99%] are suffering. We don't need Pious saviors we need responsible politicians that trust us to work hard and use fair equitable opportunities to make a humane future for ourselves and our families.

Even more important than the economy is the declining nature of the American sense of morality. Without our morality, we loose everything as it was morality that was our founding principal and from that the founding principals of freedom, self reliance and self determination. Without morality we are surely lost and any government derived by a people without morality is corrupt and incompetent. Just ask the Soviets. Ryan understands these principals. It is; however, very unclear if Romney does.

New York Times assessment of Paul Ryans Budget
It is one where the rich pay less in taxes than the unfairly low rates they pay now, while programs for the poor — including Medicaid and food stamps — are slashed and thrown to the whims of individual states. Where older Americans no longer have a guarantee that Medicare will pay for their health needs. Where lack of health insurance is rampant, preschool is unaffordable, and environmental and financial regulation are severely weakened.
