Anti-Cockfighting Law Helps Law Enforcement Crackdown
Lt. Joel Caldwell’s animal protection career began 12 years ago, when, as a deputy sheriff in Harris County, he responded to a call about a cat with an arrow through its body in a Houston trailer park.
On Thursday, Caldwell — now the police commander of Galveston’s Animal Services Unit — oversaw something just as disturbing: the arrest of a man for allegedly raising more than 300 cockfighting roosters in his backyard.
In May, Texas legislators passed a bill designed to help police officers in pursuit of illegal cockfighting. Forcing the birds to fight in the ring was already illegal ...

They are quite tasty too..perhaps i should not buy tyson chickens.. I understand that's a fairly harsh way for a chicken to live too. At least in a cockfight there is a Chance...

What concerns me is that there is a more pressing issue to save roosters from illegal fighting but we can "expedite foreclosure" on homeowners that don't pay homeowners association fees within the year that they are due. Our legislature is willing to save an animal rather than take human beings into consideration when it comes to hard times in an economic crisis. Way to represent those that voted them into their jobs. Last I checked, a cock couldn't vote.

Why is cock fighting illegal but we can kill 50 billion a year to eat? Many are killed in very inhumane ways so don't even try that one... Really, Why?

The perspective on that photo would have us believe that the cocks can take care of themselves.
But seriously, here's an issue we're behind Oklahoma on. Go Texas.

My innocent comment was deleted (presumably for the use of a word that appears throughout this article). So restated: Given the perspective of the picture [and the apparent 6 foot chicken], the chickens can take care of themselves.
But yes, this is an issue we were behind Oklahoma on. Glad to see Texas catching up.

I guess since animals can't vote, by Lisa's viewpoint we should be able to do anything we want to them. Dogs don't vote either Lisa. Are you ok with dogfighting as well? Ron, if you want to stop eating chicken then great. But the fact people eat meat is no excuse for having animals fight to the death just so some yahoo can gamble on which bird will kill the other.

Cockfighting is a cruel activity with no redeeming qualities and all of us at the HSUS are very grateful to the authorities involved in this case for taking it seriously. Those who are interested can learn more about the cruelties of cockfighting at http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/cockfighting/facts/cockfighting_fact_sheet.html. We are human and animal rights advocates. Our simple request from our esteemed congressmen is to exempt non lethal humane inventions from all cockfighting laws so that it can be implemented to retrieve the billion dollar industry lost due to the ban.
IT’S AMAZING. PHILIPPINES COCKFIGHTING INDUSTRY HAS ESCALATED TO $1.2 BILLIONS …
-- in a short 3 years span induced by the exodus of American Breeders and accessory businesses due to the cockfighting ban. . Case in point, is the 2011 stag Bakbakan Derby which suddenly can afford guaranteed cash prize of $1 million dollars (P40, 000.00) with P2 million bonus.
