Speaker Candidate Hughes Promises to Decentralize Power
State Rep. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola and a candidate for speaker of the House, promised his colleagues on Thursday that he will decentralize power in the lower chamber if he is elected.
"Over time it is natural for power to be concentrated, and this session provides us an opportunity to reverse this trend, and to move power out of the Speaker's office and back to the members," Hughes wrote in a letter to House members less than 48 hours after polls closed in the general election.
Hughes filed his speaker candidacy on May 29, the day of the primary election ...

Interesting--- if I understand this proposal correctly committee assignments would be by seniority regardless of party (or speaker affiliation). While I respect my Democrat colleagues I'm not willing to surrender to them. 17of the top 25 seniority members are Democrats. This proposal would allow Appropriations, Ways and Means and/or Calendars to be dominated by Democrats. Also, it should be noted that all 8 of the Republicans in the top 25 voted for Speaker Straus last session. There are good reasons to keep the present mix of seniority and speaker appointments. It assures that the majority has control but not absolute control.

Does Representative Hughes plan to actually VOTE in the next Speaker's race?

The tea party whack-jobs that I've seen waving around the Constitution and complaining that Strauss is not conservative enough should get their way. It will be the last time the Republicans dominate the legislature and will begin the end of their dominance in this state. It is demographic, but the drooling, knuckle dragging ideologues that dominate the current Republican Party haven't gotten the message. The priorities for this state are Education funding, Transportation and Water. Their priorities are TSA groping, sanctuary cities and vaginal probes. We have become a national joke. Electing Hughes as speaker will completely remove any filter between the radical desires of the worst segments of the modern Republican Party in Texas and their own worst instincts. Perhaps they missed the meaning of the election the other night.

If the House District 9 race of Wayne Christian and Chris Paddie reflects the Speaker race then Straus can buy the race as per the Buying Votes TT article.Paddie stated to TT that 90% of HD9;Cass,Marion,Harrison,Panola,Shelby and Sabine could not even name the current Speaker.Paddie placed on the table Raising TAXES ON GAsoline in the interview.Although not addressing Horsetrack and Riverboat gambling directly Paddie got the Horse breeders and gamblers like Straus to come to Marshall and an ex-state senator spoke to the chamber of commerce on gambling and how raises for teachers and administrators would be funded.Jumbotrons for every football field like Carthage Bulldogs home of Paddie. So we can call the talk of East Texas KMHt of Marshall and let DJ Paddie know we want born again Bryan Hughes or liberal Joe ....HD1 Rep.George Lavender told the Cass County Patriots he voted for Joe,so there are two votes for him from Texarkana to Hemphill. Oust Straus and let your voice be heard.Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas Jesus is still Lord of all.Respectfully;John McIntyre Reagan delegate 1984
