Simpson Files for Speaker, Wins Backing of Hughes
Update, 2:04 p.m.: Erin Daly, a spokeswoman for Speaker Joe Straus, issued a statement on David Simpson's entry into the speaker's race and Bryan Hughes' exit:
Speaker Straus enjoys support from a majority of Republicans and Democrats in the House, and rather than campaigning for the position, he is focused on leading the House as we prepare for session.
Update, 8:58 a.m.: State Rep. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola, is dropping his bid for speaker of the House and endorsing state Rep. David Simpson, R-Longview, for that leadership post. Simpson announced Monday morning that he planned ...

This is interesting, I read this plot predicted in a blog last week, the blogger wondered if this had been the plan all along, since Hughes was one of Simpsons biggest contributors and they are friends and both have ties to trial lawyers: bit.ly/Uh09IP

This is funny to me. It's almost like they really think that Conservatives who actually want to pass Conservative legislation will go for this- they won't. Rep. Simpson as Speaker would be a surefire track to getting nothing done, plus we're still stuck with many of the same reservations we had about Bryan Hughes!

David Simpson is a stand-up guy. In addition, he has huge support from citizens because he is a Statesman rather than a run-of-the-mill politician.

David Simpson is a complete moron.
Watch one of his speeches on youtube. He reads like a 5th-grader.
Longview should be embarrased by that religious wacko.

The trial lawyer slam on Simpson is an interesting tack, especially given that he was endorsed by TLR and was with them on every issue that I can recall.
Try making a case for why Straus should retain the Speakership instead of making up negatives for the other candidates.

Rep Simpson would make a great choice. Conservatives love him. He is very independent, so Independents love him. The democrats usually disagree with him, but they know that he is fair and will listen to them and treat them well. Straus has been a disaster on all fronts, and Simpson would be great on all fronts. Obviously, the democrats would like to have one of their own in office, but that wont happen, and Simpson is probably the only Republican who would go out of his way to make sure they are treated fairly. Simpson is such an honorable, Christian man.

This is great news! I've met Simpson, and he'd make a wonderful speaker.
David Simpson
Joe Straus, the Speaker of the House
He's gonna unite, the left and the right
you better vote his way, on speaker election day
or your bills' are gonna die, 'cause joe's an eye for an eye.
from the streets of Alamo Heights, he'll protect property rights
and our favorite Speaker, is a definite keeper
Mr. David Simpson, should reevaluate his position,
'cause Straus will wreck his ambition, with a bi-partisan coalition
and with a swing of his gavel, his plan will unravel
and when the vote goes down, David's gonna be the clown,
while the Journal of the House, records the name Straus
Joe Straus, the speaker of the House
when this election is done, he'll be the chosen one
then he's gonna fill committees, with whomever he pleases
If you continue to ramble, that you don't like to gamble
and you're from the inner city, you'll get rural affairs committee
joe straus, is a Texas Tradition
and Speaker of the house, is his position
no matter what you say, that's how its gonna stay
the Liberty Caucus, might make a raucous
but its a Tea Party fiction, that anyone agrees with Simpson's positions
Matt Beebee tried to play, but got sent on his way
and on speaker election day, they'll feel groped by the TSA
Joe Straus, of course, is like champion horse
and the rest are just ponies, far right phonies
in two-thousand eleven, we were all in heaven
cause he balanced the budget, and they wouldn't touch it
they'll soon be dismayed, with their futile crusade
and surely straus is unafraid of their silly masquerade
his record of perfection, ensures Straus' re-election
