Victoria Hospital Won't Hire Very Obese Workers
A Victoria hospital already embroiled in a discrimination lawsuit filed by doctors of Indian descent has instituted a highly unusual hiring policy: It bans job applicants from employment for being too overweight.
The Citizens Medical Center policy, instituted a little more than a year ago, requires potential employees to have a body mass index of less than 35 — which is 210 pounds for someone who is 5-foot-5, and 245 pounds for someone who is 5-foot-10. It states that an employee’s physique “should fit with a representational image or specific mental projection of the job of a healthcare professional,” including ...

So, the boss man doesn't like fat people and he thinks Indian Cardiologists are Middle Eastern. No wonder Citizens is having a hard time competing with DeTar there in Victoria.

Amazing. What is next?

Vote Republican, help them win and you will see and maybe experience it yourself, more of this behavior and mindsets taking us back to 1950.

The first "medical dumping" laws were a result of policies at a hospital in Victoria. Looks like a new tradition

I can see Greg Abbott jumping in to help the hospital discriminate against the obese and Middle Easterners. It's his and the legislature's version of Christianity.

What about skinny people?

Are they planning to turn away obese patients, too? Or, maybe the next step is to discriminate against sick people.

The food was changed in the USA, UK and Australia 30 years ago when dangerous food chemicals from the USA was allowed into European. The food today causes stubborn insulin If you have stubborn insulin you hold fat and have a hard time losing weight. You can eat very little and the weight still does not come off. Stubborn insulin will hold fat and diets won't work. When researchers used a specialized diabetes diet on overweight people all lost weight even those who did not have diabetes.

Just another embarassment for Victoria. This is the hospital that closed the only psych unit in the area. Wouldn't want folks to think we have mentally ill folks here...

If you had a qualified Dr. and/or nurse or admin staffer that fits this criteria, patients will definitely get the short end of the stick. Who is kidding who. Forget all that exact measurement crap. If you look fat, they will cut the interview short and let you be on your way. Last time I was in Hospital, I don't recall any overweight staff, but the care was pretty bad. I think I came out with more illnesses than when I went in. What is next?

These are some lax rules, people-- even for Texas.
if you're a man with a BMI of 34, you are *morbidly obese* and are not even remotely considered to be in acceptable health or of an appearance that is suitable for working in a healthcare environment
Throttle that BMI requirement down to 30 and throw in a wellness program to bring them down to 27

I can't believe that this kind of discrimination exists in this day and age. The last thing a patient thinks of while they're in a hospital is if the nurse or doctor's "physique fits a representational image." Quality care is their only priority. Oh, and if you're going to discriminate--then, Hey-- go all the way. Ban people who have heart disease, COPD, IBS, high cholesterol, smokers, congenital disease, etc. And don't forget to screen your present employees too and see who is left standing...Shame on you Victoria Hospital...

Sounds like good sound business practice to me. Health care is serious stuff that requires employees to be at the top of their game physically and mentally. So is the military. Last I checked, the Army wasn't allowing soldiers to sit around and get fat either. This isn't just about appearance, people. It's about capability and efficiency. If it were about appearance, they'd ban ugly people too.
