Study: Texas Ranks Last in Mental Health Spending
Despite an increase in state spending on mental health care, Texas still ranks last in per capita funding for people with mental illness, according to a report issued by the National Alliance of Mental Illness.
The report showed Texas increased its spending by 4.3 percent over the last three years — the 2012 budget is $964.1 million. But NAMI Texas Executive Director Robin Peyson said that’s not enough.
“I think that mental health stakeholders, NAMI and other partners, need to help our policymakers understand why it’s penny-wise and pound-foolish to not pay for mental health services,” Peyson ...

A couple of questions:
(1) Why compare "Per Capita" Spending? It doesn't take into account the number of people who are actually mentally ill and/or seeking mental health services, nor does it factor in big differences in health care costs in different states.
(2) How much would be "enough", if not $964 Million (a 4.3% increase over 3 years)? $1 Trillion? $2 Trillion? Unfortunately, resources are limited and must be allocated among many valuable uses.

I have been a Mental Health Professional practicing in Texas for over 32 yrs. It is truly tragic what this state does to suffering people. What is also disgusting is how insurers in Texas are allowed to call the shot on treatment for even those who are insured.
