Draft Water Plan Says Texas "Will Not Have Enough"
Every five years, the Texas Water Development Board publishes a water plan for the state. The 295-page draft of the 2012 plan, published last week in the midst of the worst-ever single-year drought Texas has ever experienced, is a sobering read.
"The primary message of the 2012 state water plan is a simple one," the introduction states. "In serious drought conditions, Texas does not and will not have enough water to meet the needs of its people, and its businesses, and its agricultural enterprises."
The report is packed with data and projections, but a few stand out. The state population ...

Isn't shortage of water issues another fabulous reason to share and integrate our country with Mexico and beyond?

The story reminds me of the Fram oil filter commercial where the mechanic said, you can pay me now or pay me later. Our dwindling water supply didn’t have to occur had there been the proper leadership and courage to plan for our future. Instead, Perry and Bush, alone with other elected officials decided to to be, penny wise pound foolish, cutting taxes and pandering to the wealthy. They should have used past surplus to plan for our future by building highways, schools and future water supplies.
Our, ‘leaders’ have done a disservice to all but the well connected like Bob Perry, James Lieninger and Red McCombs. We'd better wake up and realize our current Legislature and statewide elected officials sole goal is to protect their campaign contributors from paying their fair share to live in our great state. Thay have ignored sound public policy planning. The weak economy is finally making their shortsighted decisions apparant with the crumbling, "Texas Miracle,"

Conserve. Republicans love it when it comes to cash, its time we embrace conservation the way El Paso did in 1979.

I'm sorry but planning for the future in Texas went out of style when the Republicans took over. It might cost money and have government do something plus we might have to give up something and even sacrifice (Remember what George W. said we should do to "sacrifice" for the War Against Terroism--go shopping!).....Of course, we can solve this problem like all the others----"privatize" and cut out all the waste, fraud, corruption, duplication and unnecessary spending in state government.....Just like we planned ahead to fight range and forest fires (Not!).

We must change our usage patterns if we are going to survive and continue to thrive as a state.

Simple solution - build desalination plants down on the gulf coast. Plenty of free water in the ocean.

Fracking doesn't help things a bit, not only are we limited in supplies, but these supplies are being poisoned with heavy metals and toxic pollutants.

HOA's also need to stop enforcing green lawns and start enforcing native plants that don't require heavy water usage.

I worked for Klotz Associates out of Houston for three years from 2007 to 2010. In a staff meeting Wayne Klotz, the company president and then president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), told us that if Texas didn't do something serious to address our water problems, within ten years the Austin area would be out of water.
I'm happy to see that someone is paying attention. The public really needs to know about the coming water shortage so that money can be spent to remedy it before it's too late.
