Texplainer: Who Can Fire a UT System President?
Hey Texplainer: Who has the authority to remove a sitting university president — and what's the process for doing it?
A Texas Monthly blog post last week cited an unnamed source saying that University of Texas Board of Regents Chairman Gene Powell had asked Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa to recommend the firing of President Bill Powers. Both Powell and Cigarroa have denied the conversation ever happened — but the story has raised questions about who, exactly, is authorized to terminate a university president.

Soooo...what's the vice chancellor's beef with President Powers? Just curious...is it that he's basically set up the university to be a bastion of corporate donations and interests? Or is that old news?

Luisa, yes, Lorene Rogers was UT President from 1974 to 1979. Jill, The University is not a bastion of corporate interests (you would need to show proof of that), and the reason why the universities (not only UT) have to rely much more on donations is because the governor and the legislature have consistently decreased the amount of funding from tax revenues (while the demand for services increases).

If i recall correctly, Rogers became president after the regents fired Stephen Spurr on an 8-0 vote with Lady Bird Johnson abstaining.
