State Board of Education candidate Brian Russell has got the social conservative circuit covered.

When the District 10 GOP runoff contender stepped out of last week's board meeting, he found himself among friends: SBOE member Ken Mercer, R-San Antonio, who handily won a primary against a more moderate challenger, and state Rep. Wayne Christian, R-Center, the head of the Texas Conservative Coalition. Russell, a patent lawyer and member of the State Republican Executive Committee, also boasts a lengthy list of endorsements, including that of the seat's outgoing incumbent, Cynthia Dunbar, R-Richmond.

    Mr. Russell, I'd like to make a suggestion. Instead of talking about Bob Craig and me, you should focus on your challenger. I think one opponent should be plenty.

    Dr. McLeroy didn't talk about what I do for a living because it is a non-issue. We talked about the issues facing public education, not political spin. After looking at your website, it appears you are more interested in politics than public education.

    In my opinion, it is more relevant whether a candidate fundamentally believes in the public education system more than what he or she does for a living. I respect your family's decision to choose the education best suited for your children, but I wonder how you will have any idea what happens in public schools or what they need from the SBOE.

    Do the voters a favor, cut out the sideshows and talk about the issues.
