Anyone else see the irony of pushing for the addition of Tier 1 institutions while making deep cuts at the current Tier 1 schools (UT Austin and A&M)?

We don't "do" irony in Texas, as that would require complexity of thought.
If more Tier 1s do more with less, we'll call it "sacrifice outreach."

The current Tier 1 schools have taken from the other schools many times. So, I think they can tighten their collective belts. Maybe your alums should give more to academics and less to football.

In an email, University of Houston President Renu Khator told the Tribune, "We could not hope to sustain this strong level of support if we were not doing our part to build one of the nation's premier public research universities." "Our approach will not change," Khator said. "We will continue to build on our momentum and pursue excellence in all we do."
- why does it seem like she never says anything substantial? PR says to be as vague and positive as possible because it's safest? these are pretty weak quotes at any rate. i guess you can't really ask hard questions when you are depending on these people to come to your festival. ah, so called expert sources - you scourge on journalism.
"The University of Houston — which has since received tier-one designation from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching" - I think this is misleading. I think the whole Tier One thing is misleading since it doesn't really have a stable definition. I've read that it's schools ranking high in AAU, US News, and Carnegie - not just one. I've read on UH's website that we are Tier One, we are almost Tier One, and everything in between. Either way - I think it's just a vague, misleading PR term that should be avoided.
I'd like to see more objective reporting from a non-profit paper that gives good lip service to journalistic ideals. maybe if you formed a stronger non-govt/corporate community you wouldn't be so dependent on the elites and have to run such shoddy quotes.
