Higher Ed Chair Seliger Tackles New Post With Open Mind
Since it was created in 2009, the Senate Higher Education Committee has been led by state Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo. But this month, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst replaced the chairwoman with state Sen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, who got the post, according to a statement from Dewhurst's office, because of “his ability to work well with all members.”
Beyond his eight years as a senator in a district that has six community colleges and two universities, Seliger’s background in higher education policy is thin, particularly when compared with that of his predecessor. Still, with major higher education issues on ...

Michael Quinn Sullivan is an anarchist. His goal is to destroy any well functioning public institution. Our public universities are the last remaining institutions the Republicans haven't yet managed to gut. I hope that Senator Seliger will take a pragmatic approach to the higher education committee. Sullivan takes the approach that all government should be defunded and outsourced. Had we followed the approach advocated by the knuckle-dragging morons at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, we would have replicated the disruption and unrest seen at the University of Virginia. The solutions proposed by TPPF and Sullivan, like much of the Republican agenda these days are "solutions" in search of a problem. My personal goal is to get the TPPF and Sullivan to the size where they can be drowned in a bath tub. Only then will this state be able to move forward and address the pressing needs that have not been met in the past 10 years.

Open minds like Mr. Seligar very often are really holes in his head.

You'd rather he have a closed mind and an agenda, regardless of how stupid or misguided?

The Stealth Inequities of School Funding in Texas... How State and Local School Finance Systems Perpetuate Inequitable Student Spending

Adele,
Perhaps you did not read the article. It dealt with the chairmanship of the Higher Education Committee. Higher Education means colleges, universities and community colleges. Not K-12 education. If what you are trying to say is that K-12 education needs better, more equitable and more reliable sources of funding, I don't disagree. My comments were aimed at current efforts to undermine higher education through misguided "reform" efforts.
