Natalie Butler and Christopher Covo, are both student leaders from public universities in Texas. But they find themselves on different sides of the state's ongoing higher education reform debate. They recently sat down to hash out their differences with Trib reporter Reeve Hamilton.

I was a professor in higher education during the last half of the 20th century and currently a Dist. Prof. Em. Governments have forgotten that education is an excellent investment. The cost of the GI Bill after WW II was paid back more than four times in increased income tax payments by the recipients of the benefits of the Bill.
A message to Natalie Butler and Christopher Covo. Money has value and when you borrow money you are required to pay back the amount you borrow plus interest. I listen carefully to your comments and found they were typical of the comments of students on university committees. Long on words but short on substance. They were asked for specifics but gave only general comments. Progress can be made when there is a collect search for wisdom on direction and decisions needed by any organization, including governments.

I see Natalie got her talking points from President Powers' office and did exactly as he told her to...

Scott. Are you employed by Perry?
They both spoke well, but with very different goals in mind. Covo speaks almost as if UT's excellence somehow translates into higher tuition at Texas State.
It might have been better to have a debate/discussion between Natalie and another current UT student who sees things differently.
