A University of Illinois study examined the impact of depleting three major U.S. aquifers, finding that the aquifers' draining could lead to food insecurity and water shortages in cities. The study looked at the Central Valley, High Plains and Mississippi Embayment aquifer and found Illinois is transferring significant amounts of water from the latter two. (Public News Service)
