Study Finds Toxic Chemicals in Half of European Waters

According to a study conducted by four European institutions, the ecological risks are far greater than previously estimated for almost half of Europe's bodies of water, including the Danube and Rhine rivers. Toxic chemicals from agricultural runoff and overflow from sewage plants are a growing threat, say the authors of the study from the Institute for Environmental Sciences Landau, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, the University of Lorraine and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology.
