Texas is losing billions of gallons of water each year to aging water pipes. Although only 10 percent of the state's utilities are required to report the amount of water lost to leaky pipes, the loss in Houston last fiscal year, as reported by the Houston Chronicle, was 22.4 billion gallons — some 15 percent of its water usage and enough to supply 383,000 residents for a year.
