Despite Pushback, Gender-Separated Classes Persist

A number of public school districts are experimenting with what some believe to be an outdated and disproven tactic: single-sex education. Schools in Broward County, Florida, are echoing a trend seen in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. But experts, including UT-Austin psychology professor Rebecca Bigler, warn against separating boys and girls. Gender separation is thought to increase prejudices based on stereotypes and has inspired the ACLU to file complaints with the U.S. Department of Education against several programs, including two new single-sex middle schools in Austin ISD.
