Texas cut nearly 8,000 state jobs over the last year, according to a report released on Thursday by the State Auditor's Office, which collects employment information from state-funded organizations. That's a 2.5 percent decrease in total state employment. The bulk of the job losses — 6,179 full-time equivalents — were at state agencies, which bore the brunt of the $15 billion budget cuts that kicked in September 1st. The rest of the losses were at higher education institutions.
State agencies prepared for the cuts by slowing dropping employees throughout 2011. This interactive shows the annual rate of decline or growth at each state-funded organization by article of the budget.
