Interactive: Measuring the Gender Wage Gap in Texas

Women in Texas made 70 cents for every $1 that men made in 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey. The median annual income for men was $32,200 in 2011, while the median income for women was $23,201.

This interactive provides three ways to look at the gender wage gap in Texas. Taken together, they paint a clear picture: Texas women, in general, earn less than Texas men.

First, compare the number and percentage of men and women in each income bracket. The majority of individuals who earned less than $20,000 in 2011 were women. Men made up an increasing majority of individuals in income brackets above $50,000.

Next, click to view the second graph, which shows the median annual income for men and women by industry. Construction is the only industry in which women have a higher median wage than men, who make up 92 percent of workers in construction.

Finally, hover over the congressional districts in the map below to gauge how median annual incomes for men and women vary across the state. The map is colored to show the median annual income of women as a percent of the median annual income for men in each congressional district. There are only two congressional districts in Texas where middle-income women earned 90 percent or more of what middle-income men earned in 2011. One of those, CD-13 in Dallas represented by U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, has a slightly higher median annual income for women than it does for men.
