Pressed on "Sanctuary Cities," Perry Short on Specifics
Gov. Rick Perry wants an end to "sanctuary cities," but in a press conference Wednesday morning, he didn't name specific cities he wants Texas lawmakers to target. Nor did he address whether the Department of Public Safety's policy of state troopers not inquiring about the immigration status of people they pull over should be changed.

Immigration is a federal issue not a State issue. That is why there is the INS. Perry needs to keep his nose out of it.

Thanks to the "Trib" for at least asking the questions.... that need to be asked. Gov. Goodhair, unfortunately........ is all hat.... no cattle.

Awkward moments like this explain why he didn't want to debate anyone during last year's campaign.

All officers within Texas should have authority to enforce all laws. They are all paid with our tax money no matter what pot it comes out of! Rid our state of illegal aliens!

Kay, our Federal government has failed miserably in terms of protecting our border with the failed-state of Mexico. Nor is the Federal government interested in doing anything meaningful about i. But you know that. Right?
I for one am thankful to see our elected State officials step up to manage one of our state's most important and pressing issues...regardless of "who's" job it is.

There is a Sanctuary Texas in Parker county. Population 256. Maybe that's what he's thinking of. I am glad people are asking him questions. It's about time. Too bad they didn't press him during the election. We might have had Governor White or Hutchison instead.

The fact that our own state police don't ask about immigration status is all you need to know about the reason for Perry's call for legislation on sanctuary ciities--political!!

AKay -- Illegal Aliens affect everything on the STATE level as well as the FEDERAL level. And when the FED doesn't do it's job, it's up to the STATE to do it for them.

Actually, Christopher, no it's not. Jesus. Does anybody have a perfunctory understanding of our government and how it works? I mean, this isn't just irritating, it shows how poorly you understand the American governments and its institutions. I agree with everyone having a voice, but if you can't even be educated to the minimum of understanding how our government works, then you have no business being at the table of discussion. Period.

I just want to understand why someone who claims he believes in local control is talking about mandating something else to local governmental entities.

During his re-election campaign he termed Houston as a sanctuary city. there are many more along the border. The hispanic community is widely split over illegals. Buy at any rate the state government does not have authority to enforce immigration law.
