In April of 2002, Debbie Riddle was sworn into office as state representative for District 150, making her the most senior member of one of the largest freshman legislator classes in Texas history. Since then, she has authored or sponsored 20 bills that have become law, including the Jessica Lunsford Act, which made violent sex offenders eligible to receive life without parole.
Riddle has been honored as one of the Texas for Fiscal Responsibility's "Taxpayer Heroes" for her high score as a fiscal conservative and was named one of the five most conservative members of the House in a 2010 study by the Baker Institute at Rice University. Twice she has been named “Legislator of the Year” by both the Texas District & County Attorneys Association and the Texas Municipal Police Association for her work in the area of criminal justice legislation.
She currently serves as chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Criminal Justice and has served on the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence Committee for the past seven years, four of them as the vice chair. She previously served on the State Affairs, Ways and Means, Financial Institutions, and Border and International Affairs committees, as well as the Joint Select Committee on the Operation and Management of the Texas Youth Commission and the Criminal Justice Legislative Oversight Committee. During the 2004 interim period, she was also named chair of the Joint Interim Committee on Long Term Care.
Born in Houston, Riddle graduated from Waltrip High School and attended South Texas Junior College and later Southwestern University in Georgetown. She and her husband, Mike, have lived in the FM 1960/Spring/Tomball area for 30 years.
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Several times a month, The Texas Tribune hosts a series of conversations featuring prominent elected officials and other newsmakers at the historic Austin Club in downtown Austin. These in-depth discussions are moderated by the Tribune's CEO and editor-in-chief, Evan Smith. Coffee and pastries are served before the conversation begins, allowing time for our attendees to mingle. A question-and-answer session afterward offers a chance for the audience to interact with our honored guest.
Special thanks to our promotional sponsor, Deborah Ingersoll of Legislative Solutions.
