Senator John Carona was first elected to represent SD-16 in 1990. Previously, Carona was elected to three terms in the Texas House of Representatives.
Carona cites his legislative priorities as education, health care, criminal justice, banking and finance, economic development, transportation and homeland security. He currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Business and Commerce Committee and as Joint Chairman of the Legislative Oversight Board on Windstorm Insurance. He is a member of the Senate Select Committee on Redistricting and the Senate Criminal Justice, Education and Jurisprudence committees.
Furthermore, Carona also serves as Co-Chairman for the Legislative Oversight Committee on Electric Utility Restructuring, Co-Chairman for the Legislative Oversight Committee on Property and Casualty Insurance, and as a Member of the Legislative Oversight Committee on Telecommunications Competitiveness. He has previously served as Chairman of the Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee.
Carona has authored or sponsored more than 400 bills that have become law and has been recognized for his legislative achievements by business associations, animal advocates, child advocates, teacher groups and law enforcement. He has been named a "Hero," three times, a "Crime Fighter of the Year," a "Trailblazer," the "Most Valuable Player in the Texas Senate," a "Maverick Who Mattered," and two times one of the "Ten Best Legislators."
Carona has been a resident of Dallas since his early childhood. Raised in East Dallas, he graduated from Bryan Adams High School and subsequently went on receive bachelor of business administration degrees in insurance and real estate from The University of Texas at Austin in 1978. He currently serves as president of a successful Dallas-based, national realty management firm. Carona is married, a proud father of five children and grandfather to two.
