Interactive: Cost Per Vote for 2014 Texas Primary Candidates

*Correction appended

In competitive races, a candidate would ideally get the best bang for his or her buck, spending just enough to secure the victory. We've calculated how much each Texas candidate for state office spent (or did not spend) for each vote he or she received in the March 4 primary.

The expenditure totals used here represent all spending from the beginning of the 2014 election up to Feb. 22, as reported on the eight-day pre-election reports that were due on Feb. 24. Many candidates are likely to have spent additional money — that is not represented here — in the days leading up to the primary. Such figures for candidates in runoffs will be made available when the next 30-day report is due April 10; for others, the next semiannual report is due July 15.

Not seeing certain candidates? If an individual ran unopposed in the primary, no campaign finance numbers were required to be filed. These candidates have been excluded.

Correction: The expenditure totals for some primary candidates were originally reported incorrectly, the result of the fact that their 8-day reports were not yet available at the time of publication. Other candidates' own reports included errors, and they have since filed corrections to those reports, altering their combined totals. We have adjusted the interactive to reflect both of those changes.
