Senate Panel Approves More Money for Public Schools
A panel of senators voted to put $1.5 billion in additional funding for public education in the two-year state budget on Thursday — including $40 million for pre-kindergarten programs, $20 million for the state's Virtual School Network and $4 million to support Teach for America.
The money would come on top of the proposed $35.1 billion in general revenue for public education, which unlike the 2011 budget did, accounts for new students expected to enroll in the state's public schools. The additional funding approved Thursday would also restore some of the $5.4 billion reduction in state ...

Teach For America is Wall Street's brainstorm. Very sad they still follow the corporate model.

So they cut $5.4 Billion in 2011 and only put back $1.5 Billion? Not enough to get us back to where we were, even if they are taking the growth in student population into account!

Not restoring nearly enough. And millions for a NEW board to oversee charters? Money for Teach for America? Bah, humbug.

Texas Tribune: can you elaborate on why money was allocated for Teach for America?
Proud Texan
Only Dan Patrick can ask for $2 million for more government employees and a new board and say that's not growing government.

Beef up SBOE (and get more qualified people to serve on the SBOE). Charter schools need to be as accountable to the tax payers just as traditional schools are. They don't need a "special" board that is going to treat them differently. PERIOD
Matthew Cowan via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Elizabeth, the board that is being proposed to oversee charter schools will not be treating them differently. The purpose is to provide greater oversight and a mechanism for opening and closing charter schools. The SBOE has enough on its plate for that agency to oversee.

A board composed of people appointed by the current administration to oversee their "pet project" of charter school expansion. Hmmmm. What could possibly go wrong?

Kathy Schmidt with the win.

The Governor of the State of Texas make appointments all the time. He appoints Regents who hire University Presidents. He appoints board members for various occupational and professional licenses who determines who and who do not get a license or punish those who violate state law. The Governor appoints people to water authorities and river authorities who allocate water to people. He appoints people to the TCEQ and TXDOT. Point is that the Governor, regardless who is the current Governor, appoints a lot of people to positions of power.
The Governor appointing people to a board to oversee charter schools is not different from any other position!

Exactly Matthew. The Governor can be relied upon to make appointments based upon sycophantic loyalty and based upon the political contributtions they have made or will make to him or to proxy organizations, such as the Republican Governor's association. He's the king of the pay to play culture in Texas.

The SBOE needs additional funding. Starting a new board to oversee charters adds to more government. I thought the GOP wanted less? This board with only answer to the corporate powers that be, obviously those running the charters, and not taxpayers. Dan Patrick is a liar.
