Raw Milk Bill Draws Proponents, Detractors to Hearing
State Rep. Dan Flynn, R-Canton, said that legislation he authored to expand options for selling unpasteurized milk in Texas quickly received praise from across the state.
“When I filed this bill during early filing, I got over 500 emails that week in support from the Panhandle to the Rio Grande Valley,” Flynn said Wednesday. “It’s a product, there’s a public that wants it. If they can buy it at one place, they should be able to buy it elsewhere.”
Flynn's legislation, House Bill 46, would allow the sale of raw milk at farmers markets and other sites ...

As a former Dairy farmer, I say that this is not a good idea. Milk needs to be pasteurized first.

@kassie - that is your opinion, but should I not be able to choose whether or not I can have raw or pasteurized milk?

Raw milk is a legal product. Why can you buy a pack of cigarettes at a convenience store but not raw milk at a farmers market?

God forbid we expose people to a dangerous product. Then blame the government when someone gets sick and say why didnt you protect us.

My favorite Ronald Reagan quote is "The most dangerous words in the english language...Hi I'm from the government and I am here to help you"

It's not a bio-agent. No one is being 'exposed' to raw milk. And I'd be willing to bet that the people advocating for this bill

Aren't the kind of people who need the government to 'help' them make decisions.

Please get government intrusion out of our lives. Let consumers make their own choices.
If you don't want raw milk for yourself, don't buy it. But do not impose yourself on others.

I'm old enough to remember drinking raw milk right after milking on the farm. For folks who like milk, there is no better raw. The family drank it for generations without any problems. As for potential health problems, the current laws were written quite awhile ago and well before the much stricter regulations on dairies of today. Finally, cheese making is a hobby of mine. To be able to use raw milk to make cheeses the way it was made for centuries would be exciting. I'm an adult, fully capable of considering all the risks of using raw milk. I don't need the state (with the undoubted influence of milk lobbyists) micromanaging my decisions.

Where is the freedom in having the government make your choices?
I drank raw milk every time we went to the relatives farm as a kid. Nobody got sick. Nobody questioned it. They sold the excess to neighbors. Whatsa matter with you people? Never been on a farm before? And they used glass containers. Always.
However, I will not buy pasteurized milk from my grocery store for many reasons. Nope! For one: It's in containers of plastic. Think about that.
