Race and Change in Voter ID Support
Julián Aguilar’s recent piece on the state of voting rights in Texas as the Supreme Court begins its proceedings on the constitutionality of Section 5 included a comment from Lauren Bean, Greg Abbott’s deputy communications director:
“They know that the Attorney General’s Office has prosecuted voter fraud across Texas and it must be stopped. Those same critics also know that Latinos are repeatedly victimized by voter fraud and Texans of all races strongly support voter ID. They need to stop playing politics and start preventing illegal voting in Texas.”
Setting aside the prevalence, or lack thereof ...

I have little doubt that tens-of-thousands of legal and illegal immigrants vote illegally in federal elections; and that tens-of-thousands of dead people vote...due to fraudulent interventions of political operatives; and that tens-of-thousands of people vote more than once...due to highly partisan election poll workers in big cities.

That's an unfounded charge, a blatant lie in fact. There is no proof of widespread voter fraud. If you have no facts then don't make stupid claims.

So many idiots proclaiming falsehoods and lies to feed the burning bush. There's not enough Valium for all of them, so we'll just have to vote them out! "Sweep your state Capital CLEAN....in 2014" "Sweep the House CLEAN....in 2014" "Sweep the Senate CLEAN....in 2014"

Charles Voith,
Yes, like other ideologues of your bent, you "have little doubt". You also have little data to back up your claims of "tens-of-thousands" of immigrants voting illegally in federal elections. In fact, the data are overwhelming against you. Moreover, the voter suppression legislation and long lines at Democratic voting stations in red states last November provide further evidence that the intent of your allies is not to prevent voter fraud but to suppress minority voting. But I have little doubt that evidence of any kind will open your mind.

Voter ID laws have as much to do with real voter fraud, as laws against flag burning have to due with that massive problem. Flag burning laws to address non-existent massive flag burning are really about right wing legislators criminalizing free speech actions because they don't like the content. Given there is zero evidence of any significant voter fraud, the ID laws also address a non-problem, and also happens to give cover to conservative attempts to block groups of voters who historically vote Democratic.
But let's leave Mr. Voith alone. Clearly he is a "movement conservative", and they accept "beliefs", not actual facts, as guides to public policy. Like the Luddites before him, facts will never sway his "beliefs".
