The U.S. Supreme Court today will hear a case with the power to dramatically reshape the future of voting rights in Texas.
The case, Shelby County v. Holder, challenges Section 5 of the federal Voting Rights Act, which requires many states — including Texas — and local governments with a history of racial discrimination to seek permission from the federal government before changing their voting laws.

It doesn't take a cartographer to look at the gerrymandered voting district maps to determine that districts are clearly drawn by the Republican legislature to disenfranchise black and Hispanic voters.

I don't understand why people are against photo id for voting. As a military dependent, I could not go "home" without my dependent card. I cannot drive without my driver's license. I cannot cash a check or use a credit card without a photo id. So why the big discussions.
In Hidalgo County, specifically the City of Donna, during the recent presidential elections, at least 1 out of 5 voters is assisted. And some of these people are degreed personnel who work for the school. And other school employees are too. I invite your paper to visit our area during elections. It is a circus. Request the combination sheets from the county for the Amigos del Valle voting site during the early voting.
