President's Gun Plan Panned, Embraced in Texas
President Obama's plan, announced Wednesday, to curtail gun violence in the wake of recent mass shootings is drawing both criticism and praise in the gun-loving state of Texas.
The president is calling for Congress to implement background checks for all gun purchases and to ban certain assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Republican Gov. Rick Perry said the president's plan "disgusts" him and that it is an effort by the political left to use the killings to accomplish an anti-gun agenda. He called for prayer and a rejection of evil, as opposed to gun regulation. But Sen. Rodney Ellis ...

well, many of us are disgusted by Governor Perry in general

And of course Perry has never used anything for his political agenda...

well, many of us will celebrate Gun Appreciation Day this Saturday

Tell that to the kids' parents who support the measures, let alone the majority of Americans who do as well.

I too am disgusted, Governor Perry. We are sick of the left and their agenda!
Kelly Harlan via Texas Tribune on Facebook
The scare tactics from the left are just that.... Gun shows and legal guns are not the problem!
Aaron Harris via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Gunshows already have background checks. Those who think they don't simply have never been to a gun show. EVERY gun sold by a gun dealer at a gun show goes through the federal background check. The gunshow loophole is a political myth.
Casey Bennett via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Apparently not enough to get him out of Office. Sen. Ellis is just another example of socialism gone mad. Once again people want to make law abiding people responsible for criminal behavior. Enforce the laws we have on the books already. Why is ti fair that a felon get 6 months for armed robbery,,,,and a tax evader get 20-30 years? Oh yea,,,,,the felon came from a broken home, devoid of any real parental leadership. BS to all the liberal whiners!!!
Craig Bennett Sr. via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Background checks prior to gun purchase?! Why, that's like wanting to check someone's ID before they can vote!
Joshua Smith via Texas Tribune on Facebook
You already have to go through the normal background check if you are buying from a licensed vendor at a gun show.
Craig M Novak via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Criminals have never bought guns legally, I think that this is all done to take our minds off all the other illegal bs he and his chronies have been pulling lately. I believe our deficit is more important than gun control. shame, shame, shame on you for using the dead innocent children to futher your misguided agenda. As an American, I am ashamed of you, Obama.
Karen Spivey-Cummings via Texas Tribune on Facebook
No you don't. Gun shows have tons of loopholes.

I knew this announcement would bring out the GOP trolls. Mac, when you are celebrating "Gun appreciation day" on Martin Luther King day will you wear the plain sheet and hood or the frilly one? That's pretty much where people with sentiments like you expressed are aligned.

Aaron, you're wrong. At gun shows, there are licensed dealers and private/"hobby" dealers. The hobby guys don't require paperwork because they are making a private sale from their personal collection. They are usually the much older guys with a bunch of crappy guns.
James King via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Gun shows have "tons of loopholes"???? Please list a few please... other than private sales between two individuals. Every gun show I have ever been to, and made a purchase... I have filled out form 4473 every single time. Please identify these "loopholes" as I would like to enjoy them next time I make a purchase.
Vernon Effenberger via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Criminals "never" bought guns legally? Never? Not once? Please support that bold assertion. Also, please tell us about "all the other illegal bs" we don't know about. You must have some fantastic sources of information to be making those claims.

At least we're not having to side with Alex Jones.

Gov perry is pretty disgusting himself...nobody but military or police need assault style weapons.

Frankly, I'm a little disgusted that Gov. Perry is using the Newton shooting for a political agenda. Wait, what?
Mary Morrison via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Well I'm announcing that I am disgusted with everything that Perry says and does. I'm with Sen. Ellis. Please, please, some really great candidate run against Perry!

I am disgusted by the political right's efforts to use the Newtown shooting for a political agenda.

It isn't just the left Perry, you ignorant tool. Many Americans want sensible regulations. You know like "well regulated".
Perry has an agenda. Doesn't he?

BH's comment:"I am disgusted by the .......for a political agenda" THEN YOU MUST BE REALLY PO'd at BHO-everything is a political agenda. Ck the facts BH.
Kristi Thibaut via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Wonder what the argument is against background checks at gun shows? Why would anyone, especially a responsible gun owner, not want to keep guns out of the hands of felons?
Kristi Thibaut via Texas Tribune on Facebook
By the way, way to go Senator Ellis your bill.
Joey Halbert via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Kristi I think the argument is that you should be able to sell your own private property to whoever you want. Personally I'm fine with background checks at gun shows (gun owner, NRA member).
Joey Halbert via Texas Tribune on Facebook
I do agree with the commenter above that it seems strange to support background checks for the 2nd Amendment but not to support voter id for the right to vote. Surely one is not an undue burden while the other is?
Samdavis
Steve, not all of use rely on FOX News for our "facts". We actually read multiple sources and have "thoughts".

I'm personally disgusted with Rick Perry.

Rick Perry disgust me with his better than thou attitude and failure to protect every citizen in the state. This is the same "Streaking Texas Turkey, who flamed out, crashed and burned over "Oopsville" on the national stage. There is nothing wrong with background checks on those purchasing guns. Protecting the proliferation of weapons into the hands of those who would do harm is tantamount for those in charge and Perry has failed miserably. Greg Abbott is of the same low breeding and his gnarly attitude towards the federal government speaks to his disdain for our democratic republic. We really are a nation of states, but states have been taken over by extreme fringe movements and the TEA-Republicans are in free-fail mode. It is going to take a concerted effort by everyone interested in taking our country back from the fringe elements who have turned the Republican party into a mockery. This once proud party of Lincoln and Reagan has free-failed into extreme radicalism. It is sad that outright bigotry has trumped this once sane segment of political power. Voter disenfranchisement is prevalent across the nation and Texas has become both lightening rod and laughing stock. Colin Powell is 100% right in his assessment. Sunday, 01-13-13, on Meet the press General Colin Powell delivered a scathing indictment of the current TEA-Republican party.(www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032608/) “Powell’s words ring dead-on,” as Cory Booker said, and I have been putting these same comments out ever since Obama won the right to run against the GOP. After watching PBS’s program:www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/go…
I am convinced these white minority TEA-types were and still are nasally in their whining over their loss to the first black president. Even McCain has turned out to be a 180-er on many issues and has lost any credibility once had. All twelve TEA-Republican’s mentioned have but one plan in mind – “Do nothing!”
Career politicians like Perry must be voted out of office, because they have over stayed their welcome. Do not sit on the sidelines and allow the few with the most power and stroke to make decisions that will effect you directly without your input. We must remember that money and power in the hands of fewer and fewer people with stricter less compassion has taken hold in many states and Washington is their next target. Do not sit on the sidelines and allow others to make decisions that will effect you, or your family directly, without your input. Get active in local, state and national politics and keep yourselves informed. We can make a great change in the 2014 Mid-term election!

When did safe and secure become a political agenda?
Dale Curry
Patterson and Perry are disgusting. It would appear they care more for the right of a right wing survivalist who hates our government than the wishes of the majority of Americans.
Dale Curry
@ Kelly Harlan - Yes those of us on the "left" are sick as well. Sick of right wing NRA nuts who care more for the rights to own military style weapons than protecting children. Gun shows are the problem and I imagine you already know it.
@ Aaron Harris - Either your completely ill informed, or your deliberately misleading others with your posts. The key term in you post is Dealer. What about those guns sold not by a dealer but an individual? Despite your attempt to deceive those reading you posts, 40% +/- of all guns sold, are sold without a background check.

This goes out to all the gun-grabbing politicians out there. They talk of taking away one of our basic human rights, the right to defense of life, liberty and property.
They say they will pass new laws and all will be well. But how will these laws be enforced? By a person armed with a gun.
So when force is used to enforce unconstitutional (and therefore illegal) laws, force WILL be met with force. People will be injured; People will die on both sides.
Before they send someone’s son, daughter, mother, father, brother, sister or friend into harm’s way that they pick up a gun and attempt to disarm the American people themselves and realize they are attempting to disarm the largest, best-armed and best-trained army in the world.
As a combat veteran, I stand with tens of thousands of people who have taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against ALL enemies.
I and my fellow veterans have fought this country’s foreign enemies for years.
Do not assume that we will allow the domestic enemies to freely disarm and enslave the citizens of our country.
We who have the skills and combat experience to make any attempt to disarm our fellow citizens a very costly endeavor, ask our legislators to take great caution in any decision to vote for any gun or magazine ban of any kind.
You who vote for this unconstitutional legislation will put yourselves firmly in the category of a domestic enemy by violating your oath to support, protect and defend the Constitution.
We will fight you to the death if you come into our homes and attempt to take our guns away.
We will show you no mercy as what you are attempting is no less than the prelude to genocide.
My best advice to you is to uphold your oath and learn to live in the real world.
The government can’t and won’t protect any of us. It isn't its job. That is our job as Americans. Also for future reference, please take a high school-level history class before opening your mouth about something you don’t understand (like the Constitution).
By studying even basic history it is clear even to those with an IQ less than 80 that the Second Amendment is about the private ownership of all weapons.
The Second Amendment exists solely so that if the government becomes too powerful and oversteps its limits, the people can put it in its place.
This should have been done a while ago. However, it may be possible to restore America to the republic it once was without the need for bloodshed.
I pray it doesn't come to that. But if it does, remember the words of our third president, Thomas Jefferson: “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
You would be the tyrants of which he spoke. Remember, those you rely on to carry out your orders swore an oath to protect and defend this country from all threats, foreign and domestic.
Most will not obey an unlawful order from a domestic enemy. Those who do are fighting for a paycheck.
We on the other hand are fighting for our freedoms and our very lives. Who do you feel would win? We the people are on, as SunTzu would put it, “on death ground” — we will fight to the last man. Is that really an enemy you wish to fight?
We won’t provoke you, but you will provoke us. We will not fire until fired upon, but know this: Your laws shall be disobeyed.
God bless the republic!

@ RUDY GONZALES , this is for you : Over $300 Billion is spent on illegal aliens each year and you don`t complain about it ???? HOW COME and WHY ???? But you complain about Perry standing for prayer and rejectin of gun control.
