The Evening Brief: Texas Headlines for Jan. 4, 2012
Culled:
• 8 Texas Republicans vote against Superstorm Sandy relief (Houston Chronicle): "Texas Republicans were divided over providing $9 billion in federal aid to the victims of Superstorm Sandy, with 8 of the state’s 24 GOP House members voting no. The emergency measure — pulled from consideration on New Year’s Night by House Speaker John Boehner, was approved on a bipartisan vote of 354 to 67. It took Congress more than two months to help the hard-hit states of New Jsersey, New York and Connecticut — far longer than it took lawmakers to respond to previous storms such as Katrina."

If the $9 billion was ONLY Sandy relief...alas, there's a ton of crap in there completely unrelated to Sandy.

I'm ashamed of Texas Republicans.

Billions of those dollars don't actually go to Sandy relief.

At least now we know who are the wing nuttiest.

As long as they keep raising tuition, I can't support sending state money out of state.

Oh, did Hurricane Sandy happen in Texas? Wow, I could have sworn it was further up the coast. Why in the hell would we give money to another state to fix their stuff if it isn't mandated by the federal government in the form of taxes. If individual Texas citizens want to organize and provide relief, more power to them, but what compells the 16 other Republicans to vote to compell every single citizen of the Republic of Texas to contribute their property to another State... or state if you prefer. Texas already contributes more to the federal leviathan than they receive back. Why does Texas have to be the engine of this nation, constantly powering it?

Rob, the Republic of Texas ceased to exist after annexation into the United States.

Oh, read the story and you're talking national house, sorry, but still, what's FEMA for and that bill was loaded with pork. So, what's the problem?

I hope they remember that when the next big hurricane hits our coast and they're first in line with outstretched hands.

Eight of the state's 24 Republicans in the U.S. House recognize that the government is broke and that they have no right to steal money from some to give to others. No matter how well intentioned.

Hope Texas doesn't burn again. Sorry... No money will be the answer from other members of Congress.

Someone remind me how NJ and NY House members voted on Hurricane Ike relief for Texas and Louisiana.

Nora, Michael, et al, I think part of the issue is that there's a lot of non-sandy pork in the bill.

Led by Goober Gohmert...this same group cried crocodile tears for drought/fire disaster relief a year ago. Fucking hypocrites!

And to your heartless bastards who think the Northeast should go rot, just wait until the next Gulf storm strikes Houston or Corpus so Congress can tell you and the GOP to go to hell!!!!

As Mayor Bloomberg points out, maybe they voted against the bill because it is full of pork barrel spending not having anything to do with Hurricane Sandy

The wing nuts are strong on this comment board, I can't wait for Texas to turn blue in 10 years so these nut jobs really get to see what it is like to be a minority....lol

By many of the above posts, I can see that the looney tunes are out and about...

I'm sure governor-for-life Rick Perry will refuse all federal disaster relief to the State of Texas for the rest of his life, and he might even want a constitutional amendment to boot.

Rep. Weber voted against and he represents Galveston, Bolivar, etc on the Gulf Coast...he may regreat that vote.
Samdavis
Weber has no conscience when it comes to helping others. He's the Louie Gohmert of the Gulf coast.
