Dull as it sounds, appointing the committees in the state Senate is a big deal. The lieutenant governor is dishing out power, giving more to this senator than to that one, letting the senators know how they rank for the next several months. The idea is to get things done while strengthening friendships and loyalties, to do it without making too many enemies and to be sure the enemies who remain are too weak to fight back.

Key difference between Ratliff and Dewhurst. Politics shouldn't drive policy. It should be vice versa.

Vouchers will set the education community against Dewhurst and anyone who supports them. It will not save him with the right wing fanatics who vote in the Republican primary. Dewhurst needs to give it up. We're sick of him and sick of Perry. He needs to do the right thing and work to restore the funding they cut. They also need to reject Michael Williams as head of TEA. Just when you thought Perry could not make a worse appointment, he appoints a creationist and a cipher to head TEA.

Maybe it is too soon for the GOP to talk about "open chairs".

Lots of people supported him for exactly this reason. They knew he would be leader of the Senate again if he failed to get the nod. Now that he's back in action, only those who were on his side will get anything.

I 'm betting Mr. Extremist, Dan Patrick- NOT good for public schools. I guess they've forgotten the lesson of Grusendorf. At least, I HOPE the voters of Texas still care enough.

I think Dewhurst should call Linbeck, Charles,Butt Simmons,Bob Perry to find out how to fill those empty chairs, just let us know what they say. This will be easier than poring over boring Texas Ethics Commission donation reports.
