A&M's Outsourcing Plans Have Workers Concerned
When the Texas A&M University System announced that its flagship would gain $260 million in new revenue and savings in the next 10 years by outsourcing its building maintenance, landscaping and dining services, Chancellor John Sharp said the plan was an unprecedented way to raise money in financially struggling higher education.
“Today’s announcement means more money will be available to recruit, pay and retain faculty and researchers,” he said at a news conference on June 21.
But excitement over the plan is not universal. Many people on campus and in the surrounding community are worried and angry. A ...

Squeeze students for all you can. Outsource everyone's job to minimize outflow. Yep! That'll save money! Schooling is supposed to be the emphasis. Texas is going down hill at break-neck speed. Let's get back to the basics of educating students for the next generation.

One gets what one pays for.
I was working at UT in the 1990s when they outsourced custodial services. The university paid the vendor but had to keep on the UT staff to clean up after the vendors because the vendors did not wipe off surfaces or clean phones and water fountains.
Perhaps Mr Sharpe could require the students to do chores around the campus.

Outsourcing with a company in NC...adds insult to injury

It is part of the new Texas and John Sharp is the latest dido head to be more than willing to carry the new Texas agenda of laying off loyal workers and increasing the profits of a few. (someone should check for connections of Compass Company to Rick Perry contributions). But, I think the worst part of this deal is that somehow after going thru some elaborate process to making it look legit, they simply could not find a Texas company to do the work - it had to be an out-of-state company from NC. It seems we are trending back to the days where workers don't matter and should be grateful that someone has hired them - all the while using tax dollars to fill the pockets of corporate America. What about the pockets of the Texas Family. No excuse.

The savings that might be achieved will be from the reduction in salary and benefits Compass will pay to the terminated A&M staff that Compass hires. Unfortunately, after work starts, there will be numerous change orders that need to be implemented and costs will increase. The end result will be just like the state's deal to out-source human service applications and its data processing services, the ultimate costs will be higher. Given how higher ed reports financial information, i.e., is it local funds, state funds, federal funds being used, one will never know the ultimate costs of this undertaking. However, the likelihood that A&M will realize $260 million is about as certain as A&M will win a SEC footfall championship is the next decade.

Outsourcing! That's what you get when you allow the Texas Legislature to run higher education. Texans are ashamed of how low the state is rating in academics. It's the 1%ers that run this state, pad their own pockets, hire cronies that take the money, go bankrupt and leave citizens with unfinished highway expansion, et al. As long as we are complacent, this is what we will get. Get out and vote!

Hey A&M, you wholly support conservative leadership; this is the inevitable result.

All the people complaining are the same ones that support the Illegals. They have already saturated the construction industry,,, completely control the agricultural jobs,,, and the fast food restaurants are full. So what are they supposed to do and where are they supposed to work? They are still coming and over 2 million Legal immigrants are given green cards every year. All these people need and deserve jobs. Obama is going to give out a couple of million green cards to the Dreamers , and by extension their parents will be exempt also. Where are they supposed to work?
When they get their green cards it will open up their prospects and they will be eligible for all kinds of jobs they could not previously get without documentation.
Do not worry though,, they will be paying taxes so that makes it all good.
Besides ,,,,, they will work cheaper than a regular American and twice as hard.

Time to bring back the "public" in public and the "private" in private. I thought that TAMU was a state supported university.
Anyone remember when private and "faith-based" organizations were going after taxpayer money during a previous administration?
