If Texas wants to make higher education affordable, it can be done easily. All that needs to be done is have the legislature pony up their share of the expense. For the past decade, the legislature has been decreasing it's share of the higher education budget, thus forcing individual institutions to increase their tuition and fees.

Regarding 8th graders, the statement "...We can find every one of them in public school." is troubling because it implies that only PUBLIC schools were examined. A significant percentage of high achieving kids go to PRIVATE school. There was no mention of private schools in Texas, nor any assurance that private school 8th graders were included in the study. That information should have been explicit since it bears so heavily on the results.

For whatever reason, it just seems like Texans are not by and large interested in, nor do they see the benefit of, widespread prosperity.
