Komen Will Continue Funding Planned Parenthood
In a dramatic reversal on Friday, Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced it will continue funding breast exams at Planned Parenthood clinics, despite deciding earlier this week to cut off funding for the nation's leading family-planning and abortion provider.
"We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives," Komen Founder and CEO Nancy Brinker said in a prepared statement released on the organization's blog.
"We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done ...

Good.

Before everyone gets all excited, read the language. They are saying what they have said all along: They'll continue to fund existing grants. That doesn't exactly say they'll continue to approve grant proposals in the future.

Good news, but we certainly have had our eyes opened to how Komen functions and spends their money. Pink is in the past for me.

We will keep up the pressure on them!

Planned Parenthood DOESN'T DO breast exams.

Son of a bitch. Guess the pro abortion crew really did a number on them

Yes, Dave, they do. They don't all do mammograms because very few doctor's offices do. You have to have a referral from a doctor to have a mammogram. PP does that just like MY doctor does.

Before you condemn them, at least take the time to understand the different between a breast exam/screening and a mammogram. They are different.

Autumn: watch the video and then consider what SGK is really working for: cure or $$$$$. http://youtu.be/3QPZfcYTUaA

i call bullshit.

First off, Ms. Keiser, not a single PP performs mammograms because they do not own a single mammogram machine. Secondly, the examinations you speak of require absolutely no medication or equipment. In fact, on their own website, PP details how to give yourself a breast exam. So my one question is why they need not only grants from the Komen Foundation but the Federal Government as well in order to perform these exams, if all they will do is simply provide a referral, which costs as much or even more than that of a regular physician?

Also, the fact that abortion has been linked to higher rates of breast cancer is another reason why Komen shouldn't have done business with PP in the first place.

Good for them. They were wrong the first time.

Dear cancer NPO's: Komen and Planned Parenthood are not the real issue in this. The real issue is that while all of you spend big bucks on cancer "awareness" campaigns and marketing, cancer patients who are under and uninsured can't get the checkups and treatment they need. Time for all of you to walk the walk, not talk the talk.

Aint it the truth, Karen.

How about some real funding--for lung cancer? More people die of lung cancer than all the other cancers combined.
Very little of what PP does has anything to do with abortion; you people who want to control women-- do some real research.

Heart disease and it's complications are the #1 killer of men and women, not cancer.

Sorry. Thought this was about cancer. Oh-- it is.

This statement does very little to mitigate the damage done to what had been a very influential organization.

Breast exams save lives, Mikael. My sister's breast cancer was discovered when her doctor did a breast exam. And it was confirmed by a mammogram, which was NOT conducted in her doctor's office. She was referred to a radiologist, like most women who get mammograms, including myself. Most doctor's offices do not have mammography machines in their offices. By the way, learning how to do a proper self-exam is a skill. And the fact that PP teaches this skill is an asset to all women. And I highly recommend, as someone who is "pro-life" you might consider truly educating yourself on how to really save lives. Including the lives of women who can sometimes only afford a home self-exam.

Planned Parenthood does breast screenings -- manual exams -- conducted by medical professionals. It then refers for mammograms and PAYS for the mammograms. My OB/Gyn doesn't have a mammogram machine, either; PP does exactly what my doctor does. Mikael Garcia, don't come in here spouting the lies "pro-life" organizations have taught you. We will catch you out and correct you every time.

Leigh it is true that manual breast exams are done at pp, and these exams can save lives. However, the major expenditure of pp is abortion, even though it is a small percentage of what they do.

President Obama's attack on Catholics continues:
Contrary to conscience protections that are already a matter of law, Catholic Relief Services and Migration Refugee Services were told that a new condition for the renewal of cooperative agreements was the provision of offering a full-range of so-called reproductive services

The major "expenditure" for PP is abortion. I want some proof of that one, and if the 'person' who posted it cannot cite a reference (no, nothing from Fox is acceptable to me) then they are not being honest with you.
For the more reasonable, it is time we put this matter behind us. For those of us supporting a woman's choice, Komen's decision to wade into this highly partisan fight over an issue that is not related to breast cancer was a very bad decision. That the VP responsible for this brilliant idea is still there is not good. That being said, Komen has dropped the matter and I agree. For years this organization has done an excellent job in the fight against breast cancer; we should support their plans to get out of politics and back to the fight. For those who are opposed to abortion, I hope they will realize the work that Komen does, even with it's participation with PP, is too critical to be ripped apart in another partisan battle.
