Texas Launches No Kid Hungry Campaign
A sea of 150 elementary and middle school students from Austin and Waco met on the steps of the Capitol today to sing, cheer and kick off the Texas No Kid Hungry Campaign.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and a diverse group of corporate, education, nonprofit and government leaders spoke to the students and other attendees about a new partnership aimed to end childhood hunger by utilizing existing nutritional programs and launching a breakfast pilot program in 10 districts across the state.

On the one hand we have been told childhood obesity is a serious problem. On the other hand now we have too many starving. I am confused. Maybe a regulation that every time a fat kid opens a bag of chips or drinks a soda they must give half to a skinny starving kid? I do not care how much they give away as long as it does not cost me. We may have plenty of food , true the grocery stores are full of it. Why are the poorest people generally the largest people? We already have a programs available and by last count most are being utilized pretty well. I see many overweight people swiping their Lone Star cards at the store all the time. Maybe as a means test we should weigh them all each month before reloading their cards.

One thought about free food , free housing, free medical care and the whole FREE THING. Why do we pay people to pick up garbage along the side of the road? Does this take some special skill , or do you have to have some type of vocational training the welfare crowd does not possess? Obviously they know where these welfare ofices are located and have the ability to make it there. All we need is some trash bags and a few vans.

"Hungry Kids"? "Fear of Starvation"? The main health problem among kids is obesity, not malnutrition. And yet government wants to "solve" this "problem" by giving ALL kids "free" food - brilliant. Truly needy kids already qualify for Food Stamps - usage is at an all-time high. With our current budget deficits, the last thing we need is another duplicative government-run program to spend more taxpayer dollars on a non-existent problem.
And food in the classroom? Who's going to clean up that mess?

I really have a problem with this kind of program. Where are the parents and why can't they feed their kids before going to school? When I was growing up I had to get up earliy enough to eat before leaving for school.
The other reason that I have a problem, is that why in hell should the American rtaxpayer have to pay to feed the ILLEGAL ALIEN KIDS??????
The parents need to be parents and provide for their kids, or don't have kids when they cannot afford to raise and provide for them.

Three people that completely miss the point. Do you see pictures of malnourished people in Africa, and then berate them for eating too much because of their distended stomachs?
You can have too little food and still be obese. Food deserts and bodegas are examples.

There are no food deserts in the U.S. , except maybe in the middle of the desert itself. And what does a small grocery store/ wine shop have to do with starving kids? Ever hear of personal choice and responsibility? I am sick and tired of hearing i should be my brothers nanny, father or sole supporter. Everyone in this country has equal access and right to everything everyone else has. No one is stopping you from buying a bannana instead of a bag of chips or a soda and they cost about the same. billions of them are imported every year and I know of no locallity , city or state that bans them. I am sick and tired of hearing people complain about how mean, unfeeling, uncaring, racist , greedy and hateful Americans are. If you do not like it here there are planes leaving every day that will take you anywhere in the world you want to go. if you cannot afford a plane ,then a bus is cheaper and will take you across either border or to the oceans edge and you can swim from there , to a land where they will monitor your weight and food intake and make sure you are happy , well fed and every need will be provided for. You will be given a goose that lays golden eggs , you will ride unicorns since they are the greenest transportation around, rainbows are ever present in the sky, and pixies bring fresh produce and hot cooked meals in the middle of the night. i am so sick of this gimme gimme gimme attitude I could barf. I am not one of the 1% or the 99%. I am one of the 50% that works , pays taxes, and provides for myself without asking anyone for anything. I make my own choice as to what I eat, what I watch on TV, where I spend my money , when and where I worship or pray and I do not need anyone telling me what is good for me or what I should belive. God , the wailing and moaning is getting unbearable !!!!!!!

You don't ask for anything? Can I visit the road you built yourself? The water and wastewater treatment facilities you built?
I keep hearing about these self-made people, but not one of them wants to show how they do it.
You don't get to any station in life by yourself. No one does.

Seriously Biff?? We pay taxes that's how roads are built. "we"build them. The point you are clearly missing is people do and continue to abuse the welfare system. I say give the drugtest before they get a check, but that's my opinion. We are not talking about the starving kids in Africa. We are talking about FAT kids in America. Do yourself a favor Biff, put a picture of a starving African kid up next to a fat American kid and see if you can tell the difference. If you can't move to Africa and help them.
