Perry and Latinos Coexist Uneasily in Politics
It was an awkward moment for the swashbuckling, gun-toting governor of Texas. Fresh off the heels of several raucous welcomes before adoring groups of conservatives across the country, Gov. Rick Perry found himself staring into a crowd more intent on dessert than the speech he was delivering, and in his home state no less.
There were conservatives in the audience at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials in San Antonio last week, but they also appeared a bit stung by Perry’s recent promotion of tough anti-immigration laws, policy rhetoric many Latino political leaders say he must ...

The idea that Republicans need to cave on amnesty in order to retain both moral legitimacy and any chance at winning elections is just part of the huge myth propagated by the liberal media and professional Latinos. In reality:
1. The Latino vote is going to be majority Democratic no matter what
2. The GOP will never be able to outdo the Democrats with promises of special favors and solicitude based on belonging to the right, favored ethnicity
3. Long term Latino immigration is going to be bad for the GOP no matter what
3. The Latino vote is so much smaller than the white vote that by far a better option for the GOP is to raise its share of the white vote by a couple of points, rather than fruitlessly chasing the imprimatur of professional ethnics who demand amnesty for lawbreakers as their price, in contradiction to the will of the overwhelming majority of Americans that the law of the land simply be enforced

On perhaps no other issue is the cheerleading of establishment GOP open-borders elites farther from the simple public opinion of Americans of all races - including Latino Americans - as evidenced by the widespread support for Arizona's laws, despite the fury of hate and invective directed at that state by all mainstream media outlets.

The arguments these people use remind me of the old Saturday Night Live skits with the shark at the door telling the girl inside that he has a "candy gram," when that doesn't work, he is the "welcome wagon."

Nothing he can do would make me vote for him. He is an out of touch snob pandering to the most extreme base while foresaking all other citizen's in his state.

All Americans should stand against ILLEGAL immigration, and support LEGAL immigration, regardless your race, religion, country of origin, etc., ... Bring your culture with you, but come to America to become an AMERICAN ... don't come to America to change our country into the country you came from. Obey our laws and assimilate .. that's not too much to ask.
Joe Estep via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Wow, you mean people vote their wallets first and that pesky idealogical stuff comes in a distant second!? And I`ve seen polls of Latino voters that show there is a pretty high number that favor tougher immigration laws, must be those who are here legally or were here for generations. Go figure.

Not all jobs are created equal. Texas attracts corporations that pay wages so low that most employees qualify for public assistance.
Marc Lippincott via Texas Tribune on Facebook
He's "big business friendly" not business friendly, and there is a big difference. Austin was #1 in the nation in job growth, yet Perry only got 37% of the vote there as the incumbent. Tells you something.
Justin Mihalyi via Texas Tribune on Facebook
perry has MURDERED our educational system here in Texas. he ran for re-election touting how he always "balances our budget" only to find out after he is re-elected that we are in a GIGANTIC FINANCIAL CRISIS. he is a horrible Gov and he would not get my vote if he ran for POTUS

It's funny how so many people believe all folks of latin descent support illegal immigration, because a politician implied as much. Gullible...I would say so. Independent or critical thinkers on their own...obviously not. Look at how many today, think all latino's are evil and bad people, instead of soldiers, doctor's, nurses, teachers, firemen, etc. Nope the first that comes to thier mind is...they are bad people and hate our country because they booed at a soccer game and that politician said they are invading our country. Forgetting those same politicians have done nothing to reform legal immigration processes to allow increased legal immigration. For over 70 yrs politicians have used Latino's anytime they need a boogey man and so many fall for it year after year. Gullible to the point of idiocy.

And the USA needs a LEGAL workers' program, we need to stop our GUNS from contributing to the WAR in Mexico

Marc, it tells us what we already knew. Austin is full of liberals that cannot add. Justin, go look at how your local schools are spending the money, then complain there.
Karen Cummings via Texas Tribune on Facebook
His "job creation and business-friendly" approach will not hold up under national scrutiny. Hey Joe--post some of those polls you have seen please.
Aldo Merino via Texas Tribune on Facebook
I still don't think he's going to run, as it's his race to lose, but let him: his record on issues to Hispanic voters is every bit as bad as it is for just about everything else.
Marc Lippincott via Texas Tribune on Facebook
@Joe...apparently they can add jobs without Perry's help. Faster than any other community in Texas.
Dave Mundy
Okay, Texas Tribune. Your lefty bias is showing.
1. The caption of the photo: it wasn't an "immigration rally" it was a "pro-illegal immigration" rally. We don't have a problem with immigrants, we have a problem with ILLEGAL immigrants. Accuracy-accuracy-accuracy.
Other than that, it's a reasonably straightforward piece. Nice work, Mr. Aguilar.
Joe Estep via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Marc, Just what did the city of Austin do to add jobs? For that matter what has Perry done except not break the bank, tax industry ...

They have protected their surrounding natural resources and made it a great place to live, for one...they're tough on development permits and have funded real city planning. The citizens who work for the university have also provided a great public university education...and when those kids graduate, they want to stay here and live...they've also encouraged and expanded a revitalized downtown entertainment district, and the citizens have largely supported that. There are thousands of other progressive things they've done...largely because they don't have to fight right wing no-tax/no-service crowds in the area and let government do its job.

Joe - you have got to look through your "Governor good hair" blinders. he is an idiot that coasted in on the coat-tails of GWB and then once he got in he has done absolutely nothing beneficial for the State of Texas. my mother-in-law (die hard conservative) won't be voting for that jack-ass either, so there goes your "liberals that can't read argument." pull your head outta your butt and take an honest look at his record.
Joe Estep via Texas Tribune on Facebook
This poll for starters shows that while a majority want some kind iof reform not all are gung ho for general amnesty. Everyone knows we`ll have to come to some rational condlusion to the mess but the Dream Act with all of its give aways built in and rule by edit by Obama are not the answers. http://www.diggersrealm.com/mt/archives/002289.html http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=%22You_Don't_Speak_for_Me!%22 http://www.city-data.com/forum/illegal-immigration/174054-you-dont-speak-me-immigrants-against.html You can add me and my famliy to the list. Luisa most of illegal the guns in Mexcio are not from the USA they are full auto AK`s and knockoffs of them, didn`tknow they made those in the USA.

Justin, never said I cared much for the Pol Perry, he`s just playing the game. I wouldn`t believe him anymore than the fool at 1600 Penn. Ave. but he is better than the other choice we had though, Leave it to the uneducated to start with the childish insults. Besides the comments in the string were about the Latino population not supporting immigration enforcement. Go back and read them.... guess I was right then about the reading comp. problems on the left.. in your case anyway.
Joe Estep via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Marc, I liked Austin when I lived there. The city does a fair job of doing what they are paid to do. But what you are saying has only a little to do with why a company would want to set up there. The state tax structure is a better draw, the pretty place makes it nice for the workers.
Aldo Merino via Texas Tribune on Facebook
Joe: The trolling aside, you're missing some of the nuance in the views of Latinos, non-Latinos, liberals, etc. on immigration issues. It's not, and never has been, an issue of supporting of illegal immigration -- but how you enact measures to address it and deal with the existing millions of illegals currently here. "Sanctuary city" legislation does nothing to address the problem in practice and causes more problems than it solves, hence the opposition to the measure. That this has become a legislative priority for Gov. Perry and state Republicans is indicative of picking the low hanging political fruit for personal gain. This 'Latino' prefers pragmatic, moderate solutions, not race baiting, partisan politicking.

“Latino lawmakers say Mr. Perry’s push to prevent so-called “sanctuary cities” in Texas — local governments that prohibit law enforcement officers from inquiring into the immigration status of people they arrest or detain — resembles measures proposed in several states that are modeled on Arizona’s anti-immigrant law”
YOU’RE DANG RIGHT! But be clear, it’s Arizona’s Anti-Illegal-Immigrant Law.
And I furious with Rick Perry talks-out-of-both-sides-of-his-mouth and his primary Money-Talks-and-to-he*#-with-the-majority-of Americans contributors, Charles Butts of HEB and Bob Perry of Perry Homebuilders Construction…Texas government, as well as, the federal government should have gotten the message loud and clear on November 2, 2010 that we will not allow this country to be destroyed by bankruptcy and the continued invasion of this country by illegal aliens!
This isn’t about skin color, religion, etc, etc, etc; it’s about the closer-to-30 million illegal aliens in this country who think that they don’t have to follow any rules of law or civil society, because let’s face it and be completely honest…none of them want to be Americans. They want to be Mexicans et al in America…they have belittled, blackmailed, disrespected, and spit in the faces of America…if you pro-illegal-aliens supporters want to help illegal aliens, tell them to follow the rules, speak English, and aspire to be Americans. Oh, and call me racist/bigot/blah/blah to prove to all your inability to present an intelligent argument for this nation-destroying invasion!
major davis
And I didn’t sign up to be a Mexican, but my neighborhood is more Mexican than American, billboards are in Spanish, even this year’s swim team announcement was in Spanish…only Spanish. Are illegal aliens too arrogant or too stupid to learn English like every other immigrate has gladly done…why should we be willing bow to the most uneducated, unappreciative, entitlement-needy group known - what, to be yet another 3rd-world country? They haven’t earned the right to be called American!
Let’s rehash the type of illegal aliens that Houston Capitol of Sanctuary Cities attracts: Remember Houston Police Officer Will…Remember he was murdered by a twice-deported, 15xs ticketed, gangbanger illegal alien who was a prime candidate for the Amnesty for All Dream Act; Remember the woman that caused the injuries to the two motorcycle riders that acted like all illegal aliens and RAN thus setting up Officer Will’s death...she reported the truck stolen and as par, cowardly headed back to Mexico…this is everyday, day in and day out…Let the death of this police officer remind every American that his will be the last at the hands of the ungrateful, and undeserving illegals!
major davis
And I want to know why one dime of my tax dollars is going to fund the most racist, un-American, modern-day Klan…The Race, LaRaza? Why? I want to know why Secretary of Labor Solis is spending our tax dollars not to round up illegals, but to inform illegal aliens of their rights! We have too many Americans more Mexican…instead teaching respect for this nation, and appreciation for the many opportunities offered, they demonize and belittle this nation and our citizens…yep, they only promote those that look like they do…WHY?
Oh, here’s another clue, if you get in front of the Texas Senate, Texas House of Representatives or any body of an American government entity and have been in this country for 23 years, don’t broadcast your disrespectful arrogance and ignorance by speaking in Spanish. And this is for the spineless, pandering un-American elected official that reprimanded the one brave and honest human in the bunch…our tolerance like our compassion has been abused and taken advantage of – we have no more to waste on the ungrateful!

@ Karen and Joe - Karen he questioned your ability to use google only because those polls, if they exist, or more tparty/gop lies and disinformation. Shame on you Joe.

“This 'Latino' prefers pragmatic, moderate solutions, not race baiting, partisan politicking.”
Oh, boy, this is a goood one! “Latinos” (not to be confused with Americans of Hispanic decent, like Americans of English decent, like Americans of Ethiopian decent, like Americans of Japanese decent, etc, etc, etc – the millions who are proud to be Americans, who resent the hidden agenda to divide and conquer then destroy) prefer to bully, and name call instead debating the facts. I want to know why you separate yourselves from Americans of all colors, races, religions and their devotion to this nation only - that is held together by the glue – one common language, English.
America has a right to know who is in this country and their intentions; we have a right and expectation that our laws with be upheld and respected…not ignored by an elected administration or an agenda-driven ideology or a foreign nation illegally sending their own citizens for Americans to support against our will!
You have ridden in on the coattails of American Blacks, but nobody brought you here in chains and treated you like cattle; you have proclaimed “racism” until the word no longer holds any value.
You want to claim the status of mistreated minority when in reality, you are certainly the majority in Harris County…the question is, how many have no right to be in this state?
major davis
And has anyone every told you that you get a lot more with honey than vinegar? “Latinos” have made a huge mistake if they truly want to be accepted as just ordinary Americans first and that is you have promoted the ongoing illegal entry by your fellow “Latinos” and demand that we grant them amnesty while millions more have followed the law and come with the goal of assimilating and being proud Americans. I hate to burst your delusional bubble, but we are not impressed with people that support the demise of America, our culture, or our language…those that demand special treatment while demeaning everything American!
And here’s a real fact to consider, “Latinos” have expected special favors from our spineless pandering election candidates to the point our president who was elected to be the president of all Americans (and I apologize to my fellow Americans, I was one of the fooled) is willing to demonize our citizens (on a Spanish speaking station no less) to ensure his reelection…problem is no one has told him or the other pandering fools that the overwhelming majority of expected voters are older Americans…the ones most critical of our open borders since they have watched and lived the damage to their beloved nation, plus this nation-destroying debt.
major davis
One last one point that I want to be clear about is Americans with Hispanic heritage are very good, productive, proud Americans and I can not believe that they support this invasion…their ancestors left Mexico et al to become Americans to be afforded the opportunities that only America can give. We are the land of the free and that includes being free from the oppressing masses illegally invading this country…and those that support them!
Have a very Happy 4th of July...Independance Day for America, The United States of America...marking our release from oppression and taxation without representation (a blatant reminder to our elite, protected, out of touch politicians)
David Spratt
I am not Latino, and I do not believe that Latinos in general are in favor of ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. Unemployment will always be high in the Latino community as long as illegals continue to add to their numbers,( increased available labor and drive labor prices down.) I think most legal Hispanics are smart enough to realize this. We do not need increased legal immigration, as some would want. Already several Million per year are legally admitted through various legal visa methods from all over the world. I would suspect those calling for increased methods of legal immigration are only advocating increased Hispanic/Latino immigration and not from the rest of the world. If anything the number should be reduced across the board. With job creation at it's lowest in many years this would be the logical step in ensuring those Americans here are fully employed.

The typical GOP trash-talkers are trying to hold up Perry's governorship as the standard. Immigration is the federal government's job and these Yahoos in Austin thought they could stare down the feds. They quickly found the feds telling them that Air service would suffer as the Texans wanting air service. TEA party voters need to stand behind the rest of the Texas voters when it comes to the legislature. Gross incompetence flourished in Austin as Perry and his croonies shove through BS laws bordering on religious zealotry! Texans voted these Yahoos into office, now they will have to live with the consequences. Next time be very careful who you can trust to get action to and for the general public, and not religious zealots, intent on making you do their will. Additionally, any career politician, who promises the moon should be looked at very closely for any radicalization or length of time in office as, Absolute power corrupts. If your not happy with the current of legislators, may I suggest cleaning house and starting over! What do y'all expect from these crusading Social Conservatives? They will throw the children under the school bus at the expense of their richest super-millionaires buddies. This is what you get in a one party state! Jim Hightower said: "Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often and for the same reason." Texas has a career Governor since Texas does not have term limits! Y'all voted him into office, now it's time to vote him out!
