TX House Bills Would Crack Down on Illegal Immigration
Republican state lawmakers, buoyed by their party’s resounding victories on Election Day, are signaling just how far they're willing to go in cracking down on illegal immigration in the upcoming legislative session. A slew of bills filed Monday includes measures that would sanction businesses that hire undocumented workers, require state agencies to report on the costs of providing services to illegal immigrants and allow police to check an individual's immigration status on “reasonable suspicion.”
For state Rep. Debbie Riddle, R-Tomball, the chance to file her anti-immigration legislation before anyone else was worth camping out at the Capitol ...

Are you serious?

These are reactionary people, uneducated regarding the history between Texas and Mexico. We need to embrace Mexico as an ally not an enemy.

We need to see a bill making English the offical language of Texas and quit printing everything in two languages. The ballot would be a good start.

I seem to recall something about Texas facing a budget deficit heading into the new session--a deficit to the tune of $17B. Were there any pols camped out in the lobby frothing at the mouth about their proposals to yank the state out of its worst budgetary predicament in recent memory? Or are we primarily seeing the show-pony, spook-the-rubes types of legislation aimed at keeping real policy out of the spotlight?

Patrick's version of the Arizona law is scary. The only way to prevent subjectivity in enforcement of the Arizona law is to allow lawsuits against abuses of the law. Without that, it is a carte blanche for tyranny.
When is the deadline for legislators submitting bills?

@Mac, good plan. As a matter of fact, we should extend "English Only" to menus of Mexican restaurants. From now on, every true freedom-loving patriot will finally be able to order a "little donkey wrapped in a thin corn pancake with spicy Mexican tomato sauce" without having to bow down those job-stealing immigrants who we all know are talking about you derisively in their native tongues. Yup. That thar's a solid plan.

What kind of person "camps out" for 36 hours so she can be the first to file a bill to make it more difficult for people to cast votes?

I feel sorry for the illegal immigrants and their children, however, they are a drain on the states economics. And no, I do not believe all Hispanics/ Latino/ Mexican are here illegally. Send all the illegals back to their home countries and let them fight and march and rally for change. Our ancestors fought, our women fought, our brothers fought and we are still fighting. That is how we change things. Escaping your country to reap the benefits of ours is not right. If anything we should help them get there countries back.
