CD-23: Canseco and Hurd in a Runoff

Numbers early Wednesday morning show Will Hurd and Francisco "Quico" Canseco, will be competing in an April runoff for the Republican nod in Congressional District 23. 

Hurd, an ex-CIA officer, and Canseco, a San Antonio-based lawyer and businessman, have long been the frontrunners. Lowry is Ron Paul-backed doctor on San Antonio's south side. Canseco has the support of the conservative establishment, many of whom believe his surname will lend him an advantage in the primarily Hispanic district. Hurd earned the endorsement of the San Antonio Express-News.

U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez currently represents the 23rd, which extends from pockets of San Antonio to a corner of El Paso to cover all of Big Bend National Park and roughly 600 miles of the Texas-Mexico border. Since the U.S. Supreme Court recarved its boundaries in a 2006 redistricting opinion, the district leans Democratic, though it could swing right in an election cycle many regard as a difficult one for Democrats. In 2006, Rodriguez, who served as a member of the Texas House for 10 years and in the U.S. Congress from 1997 to 2004, pried it from the hands of 13-year Republican incumbent Henry Bonilla.
